Ukrainian Marriage And Traditions

As with most Eastern Europe countries, the Ukrainian marriage ceremony may seem a bit different for the Western civilization. The religious ceremony isn’t the same as in catholic countries, since the Ukrainians are mostly of Christian Orthodox religion. It takes longer and is mixed with national custom practices, who have been a part of the regional traditions for hundreds, maybe thousands of years.

One of the Ukrainian marriage customs is the making and decorating of a large, round piece of bread. It is called “korovai” and is made prior to the wedding by a group of women, most of which in close relation to the bride and groom. Mostly there are 7 women who participate at the making of this bread.

These women usually sing traditional songs during the making of the bread. This is a very old tradition, dating to pagan times. It has something to do with the ancient belief that corn has magical properties and is a bringer of luck and prosperity. The “korovai” bread is usually decorated with figurines, representing animals, birds or flags, pine cones, fruit, and so on. The bread has to be blessed before it is passed around to each guest.

The “korovai” symbolizes unity and family and is given to the wedded couple during the Ukrainian marriage ceremony. Each guest must have a taste of the bread, and the parents of the bride and groom are usually given a half-moon shaped piece of the bread. It is supposed to be a symbol of how families should stick together through hard times.

Ukrainian Mail Order Brides And Prejudice

When a Westerner hears the term of Ukrainian Mail Order Brides he usually thinks of beautiful blonde or brunette girls, who would accept any kind of man, as long as he lives in a more developed country than she does and earns well. They think that these girls would do anything to escape the grinding poverty of their country. This used to be true. The concept of mail order brides was very prevalent in poorer countries.

Most men would also consider men who would “buy” themselves a Ukrainian Mail Order Bride as losers, or men who chose the easy way in life, looking for a beautiful maid who would speak as little as possible (and since many of them speak little or no English at all, that is very often the case). For some men, such a lady would be the perfect spouse, since men often complain about their wives’nagging them and talking way too much. However finding this type of lady in Ukraine is very difficult these days, because as I wrote before the concept of mail orders brides has all but gone.

However, even now some men really are so shallow or old-fashioned, as to consider that the only qualities their wives should possess are a good figure and doing the chores around the house. I do not wish to enter the field of the male psychology, but my personal opinion is that, at the very least, men who resort to trying to find a Ukrainian Mail Order Bride are not very modern.

It should also be mentioned that the concept of mail order brides is indeed an old one. These days if you meet a beautiful Ukrainian lady, don’t think for one moment that the size of your pocket book will guarantee her attention. Ukrainian women value love, respect and security above all else. They want to love and be loved, so be prepared to be chivalrous and traditional if you are lucky enough to take a Ukrainian lady on a date!

And if you are lucky enough to fall in love with a Ukrainian lady, thank your lucky stars as you have found a lady who will likely be stylish, well dressed, chic, sexy, fit, toned and will also make a wonderful lover and wife to you and mother to your future children.
